A New Year and Season

January and February are the off season months. Time for workshops and more corporate filming accounts until the weddings kick in. I have also discovered a need and new market in Pet Portraits. I'll share a few pictures in February.
Promotion videos for the web are becoming very popular and I'm helping some of my competitors film theirs.( videos look great, in fact, too good)

Looks like April, May, June and October are the first months to sell out. Still have open dates for the other months if our services are needed.

Still wondering where the very best destination wedding will be this year. I have had some good ones.

It was a perfect day for Dr. and Mrs. Koonce in Chapel Hill, NC.
Beautiful Ceremony at the Chapel of the Cross and fun Reception at The Carolina Inn.
We provided the music and filmed the day.

take the wedding celebration to Marriott Downtown Raleigh.
What a fun couple to work for. They used our combo package Photography and DJ Entertainment.
Only regret the couple had, they should have added the Video package to film the fun.

We never get bored with such a variety. Two more big events and a wedding at Carolina Inn will close 2011.
One Week rest before we start the new year with a big wedding at the Wakefield club.

Added new production responsibilities during the week, producing training videos for Fire Fighters, Law Enforcement and Public Safety. Just another way of keeping our productions skills current and use our North Raleigh Studio more.
We still want to try a short film or Doc someday.

Have we been so busy with Weddings and Corporate events I just haven't had time to blog.
Anyway, Great weddings across the state and especially enjoyed our stay on Bald Head island for a great wedding there.
Chicago is another destination wedding for October and also filming Corporate events while there.
Portrait sessions have been on the calendar each month and will stay that way until the week before Christmas.
I hope you had a great summer and having a great fall so far.

good questions from interview

here are a few questions that I answered for a wedding magazine interview.

QUESTIONS:

1) When a Bride plans to meet with a potential DJ, what should they bring?

Details of your event and what are your expectations. Write down a few questions to ask. (get ideas from Weddings Magazine articles)

2) What questions should you ask?

What is their experience and what % in wedding industry. Type of equipment and is the the music source Laptop mp3 or CDs.
Full-time or Part-time. Are they insured. What do they do to stay on top of their game.( conference, seminar or continuing Ed)
Process for backup equipment and personnel.

3) Any red flags that should tell you to look elsewhere?

Lack of communication skills and knowledge of music (genre specific for your event)
If they do not have a website or not at least on four valid social network sights.
If they do not have any form of marketing or advertisement.

4) What credentials should a good and experienced DJ have? Equipment, references, etc?

References form other vendors or venue managers have more value. I love it when members of the staff say that you are outstanding, they see vendors every week.
Everyone started somewhere, but your wedding is not the place for training. You want to hire someone who has at least
two years of wedding event experience. I worked in radio and night clubs, and I can tell you , Weddings are a different kind of event, requiring
more than just playing music. Planning and Organizational skills are important along with reading the crowd. Note, anyone can play good music but
a good wedding DJ will know how to reach the the crowd ranging in ages 2-80, making it a Fun, Elegant and a Classic.

Non traditional Bridal Sessions

Brides are asking for more of my work online. so here it is.
When 90 % of your business is referrals , I just don't do much aggressive marketing. I'm so bless to have so much business from Clients that have seen my work, booked with us without going through all those hoops or presentations that sound just like other great vendors.

Don't get me wrong. I wish the best for all of the other great vendors. Believe me , there are hundreds of weddings each year. Enough to go around. I want You to book with those that you trust and whose work you enjoy.
Hopefully, that includes us.

DJ start at $850.
Photography start at $2,100.
Video start at $1,400.
That's it. Not doing prices again until end of July 2012.

January 2011 started things and looks like isn't going to stop until November.
I welcome the business.
Doing some different things this year but wedding still the foundation of my business.

Busy December

What a cold cold and I mean very cold December but business is hot this month.

Even had the opportunity to do a Bridal Session downtown Raleigh for a 2011 Bride in 36 degree temps.
In the DJ department, many great Corporate parties and looks the economy is improving based on the venues and fun had by the employees.

Had the opportunity to film author Pat Morley, MAN IN THE MIRROR and also have former Miss NC wedding this month. EPIC Wedding.

I hope you had a great summer. We have been really busy and even had a chance to improve our skills by attending the WEVA expo in Orlando Florida in August. Got more great equipment for more amazing productions.

Over the Labor Day weekend , we had a scare with Hurricane Earl, but it went by and we ended up with a great weekend for water sports and a couple of Beach Portraits.

It's football season and more weddings in the fall. So look for more great pictures.

Destination Wedding- Hilton Head

Had a great couple to work for at the Callawasssie Island Club near Hilton Head, SC.
I did the photography and sub contracted a DJ, using my gear, did the music for the reception.
Father of the Bride was nice enough to throw in a round of golf at the beautiful Golf Club. However, playing in 101 temps was a bit of a challenge.
Had a little excitement, while waiting for the reception to start, a tree next to the resort home that the wedding party was waiting in, got struck by lightning, knocking power off for a while. So what did we do, go outside and take some more pictures.

Summer is here that means I have great coastal Weddings coming up.
This past weekend we kicked off the season with Emerald Isle,NC, Islander Suites. Nice affordable place for a beach wedding.
Only downside, is the crowd of people still on the beach while the wedding is going on.( if you don't mind 300 additional spectators, still a nice place to have a wedding. Rooms are great for the price.

Busy Weekend

This past weekend was one of most exciting and the best since I have been in the wedding business.
We had a Hindu wedding( our first), Catholic and Traditional Southern Baptist events, four weddings in 4 days time. Beautiful Brides and great Grooms to work for.(May 27-30, 2010)
We had all three of our services in motion. DJ , Video and Photography.
Looks like June will be another busy month for Perfect Day.

Outdoor Wedding in Chapel Hill

May 15, 2010 was a perfect day for a outdoor wedding for Morgan and Troy. Chapel Hill Country Club provided an excellent setting for this special event.
A Perfect Day DJ provided sound and the microphones needed for the out door ceremony.
Perfect Day Images filmed the beautiful ceremony and fun reception.

The visiting Photographer was David McClain from Cincinnati, Ohio
Live performances for the ceremony and first dance was provided by Isaac Pittman.

Another exciting wedding day.

It was a Perfect Day for a wedding to kick off the month of May. Beautiful couple who was easy to work with.
However,I would recommend that your Officiant attend the rehearsal. For this event, the Pastor arrived 15 min. late and kept referring to the Groom by another name. But the couple once again maintained their cool.
Reception was a ball. I think I played all genre of music and crowd responded.
Highlight of the evening, and I mean bright light stuff, the crowd decided to light sparklers on the dance floor( inside the building) during the last dance. Again the Bride and Groom stayed cool. Pretty exciting stuff on video.

I want to thank my Wife for shooting video while I took pictures and played the hits. Great Husband and Wife team.

Brienne & Chris, March 20, 2010 Downtown Raleigh wedding.
First day of spring with temperatures in the high 70s. A perfect day.
Ceremony and reception was held at the downtown Sheraton, thank you Susan Blakely for the great on property coordination.

I was able to shoot photography for the pre-ceremony, ceremony and some post ceremony activities.
However, I needed to switch from photographer to DJ at the reception, where we had none stop dancing until the end of the event. A Perfect Day DJ

Trust and Contracts

My experience with a Bride last week brought up very important point that I would like to address.

I had the opportunity to work with Lawyers for the last three years as I video taped witnesses during their depositions and I learn real quick how the best written contract is no guaranteed that it will protect you. However, it is a starting point in the right direction.

With that said, I think it is important to have a written agreement to protect the Client and the Vendor providing the services.
I also think is very important to Trust your Vendor. If you sit across the table from someone and the first thing you ask is "I want to see the contract", I'm not sure the Trust is there to begin with.

Trust between Bride and Vendor is very important and should be the first think you feel in that meeting. The agreement just confirms that you have made the right decision and clearly states how the expectations will be met.

Ok 1) Trust your Vendor ( how you build that trust will vary)
2) communicate
3) review the agreement
4) continue to communicate
5) book that great Vendor
6) continue to communicate often

Trust First.....before you sign anything.....notice that the marriage contract is signed after the ceremony.

Just my bias opinion.

Order for Booking Vendors

Wow , I received a good question from a Bride and I thought I would like to give my bias opinion.
What order should you book your Vendors?

Planners have their way and now here is my thoughts since I provide three of most important services a Bride could have.

First a disclaimer: The order can be impacted by what is really important to the Bride and how difficult it is to get the locations and vendors that are in demand.
Of course Guest remember the location, food and entertainment.

What we did for my daughter and what other Bride's normally do. ( a year out if you want the best)
1. Ceremony location
2. Reception hall
3. food ( if the reception hall permits outside vendors) (cake order)
4. best entertainment
5. photographer
6. Videographer
7. everything else that impacts the above ( florist, lighting show, gifts for guests, transportation, etc.)

If you do not like my bias order, I would highly suggest hiring a Certified Wedding Planner.

The List

Last week's experience with a Bride reminds me how important it is to have the the list.
That list of special pictures or video footage that she would like filmed on her wedding day.

We always have a planning meeting with each of our Brides and try not to assume anything.
But even after doing all that planning , some Brides, after reviewing the pictures and video weeks after the event,
manage to request items that are not recorded.
Now our list has more pages and but we also take more time to find out what is important to the Bride through more conversations.( take notes)

Other suggestions are always welcomed.
